Text Box: He sailed out on a voyage
Aboard the brig, CHARLES DOGGETT
To rescue the BOUNTY mutineers.

As the flag was unfurled
He shouted…"Old Glory’
And the ship’s crew sang out with loud cheers.

When the Captain, William Driver,
Out of Salem, Massachusetts…
Went to Nashville years later to retire,

He took his beloved flag with him,
But when the Civil War started
Rebels sought it to destroy in their ire
.
It was renown throughout Nashville
And though they searched high and low
Rebels never found the much-hated banner.

When Union forces captured Nashville,
In eighteen sixty two,
The flag surfaced in an unusual manner.

Happy to see Union troops
The Captain unstitched a quilt
And hidden inside the quilt…never found…

Was the twenty-four star flag
He had nicknamed, ’Old Glory’
And the joy in his heart was profound.

He took his flag with the soldiers
To the capitol building…
The flag Nashville patriots revered…

And climbing up the high tower
He replaced the Regiment’s flag
While the soldiers all saluted and cheered.

Text Box: ‘Old Glory’
I watched our flag flutter
On high in the breeze…
The flag we all know as ‘Old Glory.’

She has flown high and proud
For over two hundred years,
But in her nickname there lies quite a story.

Coined by a ship’s captain
In eighteen thirty one…
The nickname ‘Old Glory’’ held fast.

He was presented one day
A beautiful flag by his friends
To fly proudly atop his ship’s mast.
