John Helms is a native of Memphis, TN and has 40 years experience in fine and graphics arts. John has had several write-ups in the Commercial Appeal and interviews on local radio and television stations. He is a Viet-Nam Era Vet and received his formal education at Mississippi College, The University of Memphis, and Memphis College of Arts. In 1989, John organized the first “Art For Heart’s Sake Fine Arts Show and Sale” at Oak Court Mall in Memphis, TN. in conjunction with WEZI FM radio. In the same year the Commercial Appeal honored John in President George Bushes’ “1000 Points of Light’ campaign for contributing his limited-edition prints and originals to help fund-raisers of various charities. John is a friend of WKNO TV and has donated many original paintings and prints over the years for their annual Art Auction. John taught Acrylic, Oil, and Watercolor classes for 1 and ˝ years at Michaels Arts & Craft Store in Eastgate Shopping Center, until he was seriously injured in a hit-and run accident in June 2007. He started teaching at Michaels again in 2011 until he quit Michaels in 2016. “ I’ve always been interested in nature and animals even as a small child. Trying to interpret it honestly on canvas or paper is always a challenge. I love beautiful, majestic landscapes as well as run-down weathered barns and old rusty trucks left in fields, forgotten with time. Texture, shape, form and color all play an important part in nature. Anybody can throw paint on a canvas and call it “art” but to do justice to nature in a painting is  an obligation to interpret it as it really is to the best of their ability. A good painting should communicate to the viewer a story or an emotion without any explanation from anyone else – just the painting and the viewer and silent communication. This communication is what I try to convey in my paintings. My goal in painting is to paint nature with an impressionistic, painterly style. My goal in teaching is to try to help my students develop their own, individual style.
